Hotub
is a fictional protagonist under which a changing number of artists work. Hotub is also a situation that acts as a bridge between the fictional and the real. Inspired by the gaze of the fool, we get distracted by ordinary things for an extraordinarily long time. Taking one snippet of reality and transforming it into new encounters, objects, and spaces, far away from our usual expectations. Hotub employs a multi-disciplinary approach that combines sculpture, costume design, sound and dramaturgy. Every piece of the puzzle is self-made, resulting in performances and installations that always have one foot in reality and one foot in the dream realm.

In ‘Vier Voor bijna Half Twee’ we explore the inner life of a main character that navigates her way through her numerous selves. Consider the act of splitting: one becomes four, the self becomes indistinguishable from the other. Thoughts, words, murmurs and whispers transfer from one body to the next in an unstoppable chain of events. What if the different versions of yourself begin to rebel against the words that define them? You are never on your own when there are four of you.

An exhibition juxtaposing a desolate landscape covered in snow with a warm but vacant living room scene. Combining sculpture, installation and textile design to create an environment that the audience can explore freely, guided by theatrical lighting and an eery soundscape.

“Hotub, een fictief hoofdpersonage waaronder een veranderend aantal kunstenaars werken. Hotub is ook een situatie die zich als een brug opwerpt tussen het fictieve en het reële, met als doel een stukje uit de werkelijkheid op ironische wijze te visualiseren. Voornamelijk ontstaan er performances en live ingrepen uit deze samenwerking waarbij kostuums en decor een belangrijk deel worden van het vreemd aandoende geheel. Voor WIJK8 werken drie kunstenaars vanuit verschillende artistieke achtergronden samen om een installatie op te bouwen op een nieuwe locatie. Wat schiet er over als het landschap van drie kunstenaars ondersneeuwd raakt? Wat als Danny Dirtbag onderkoeld achterblijft?“

‘Hotub is constructing a new city in the crypt of het Duivelsteen. The residents of this city will bring you an evening full of experimental performances and electronic music. The houses are made of cardboard and the sun projects images on the buildings. Everybody is welcome to get lost in the streets, as long as we end in a different city than the one we started in.’

"Ze slapen met hun handen aan dek, hun gespreide vingers plakken aan de tafel en terwijl de buren hun laatste dagen vieren, maakt de rauwe nacht plaats voor schemerlicht. Op de binnenplaats overstemmen kapot draaiende vijzen de ontwakende vogels, zit een vrouw de wacht te houden onder de eikenboom en hoog aan de voorkant van het dek springt een licht aan, waar waterdamp uit een pijp stroomt en een stuk karton in het raamkozijn wiegt. Ze zijn binnen in het schip."
